St. Peter's Basilica (dome climb)

St. Peter's is free to enter at ground level on most days, but the dome climb is the visit that changes your sense of the city. From the cupola walkway Rome drops away in every direction, and the dome's scale finally makes sense.

The climb is steep, narrow in places, and not a casual add-on after a long museum morning. Treat it as its own outing: basilica interior, then the stairs, then time to recover in the piazza.

Security lines at the basilica can move slowly even with a ticketed dome slot. Arrive with margin, not optimism.

Local tips

• If anyone in your group has limited mobility, skip the dome and stay on the floor. There is no gentle alternative route.
• Go earlier in the day when the stone is cooler and the queue for the cupola is shorter.
• Combine with Castel Sant'Angelo only if you have a full afternoon and a slow pace. They are close on the map and farther in energy.
