The Pantheon asks less of you than the Colosseum or the Vatican, and that is why people underrate it. One space, one oculus, and a proportion that still feels exact after nearly two thousand years.

Tickets are now required for entry. The visit itself is short, which makes it easy to slot between a morning walk and lunch in the centro, as long as you are not trying to do it at the absolute peak of midday heat in July.

Stand still once you are inside. The building rewards stillness more than circulation.

Local tips

• Visit when rain is forecast if you can. The oculus makes weather part of the room.
• Combine with a walk through Piazza Navona or Campo de' Fiori, not another ticketed mega-site immediately after.
• Early evening light on the portico is quieter than late morning.
