Colosseum, Forum & Palatine Hill

Most first-time visitors treat the Colosseum as a standalone photo stop. It is not. The same ticket opens the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, and the three sites read as one continuous landscape once you stop rushing between them.

Go early if you can. The amphitheatre fills quickly, but the Forum and Palatine stay quieter for longer, and the light on the ruins is kinder before midday. Pair this with a slow walk afterward rather than stacking another major site on the same morning.

Book a dated ticket before you arrive. Same-day inventory disappears in peak months, and the queue for walk-up entry is not how you want to start a Rome day.

Local tips

• Wear shoes you can walk in for two hours on uneven stone. The Forum paths are not polished museum floors.
• If you only have time for one interior viewpoint, climb into the upper tiers rather than lingering at ground level alone.
• Bring water. Shade is scarce once you leave the amphitheatre for the Forum.
